Wave Sheaf/Firstfruits

It is commonly taught that Easterclick here is a celebration of the resurrection of the Messiah, however this shadow picture was already rehearsed for over a thousand years by the wave sheaf offering the day after the sabbath during the week of Passover.

Lev 23:10  Speak to the sons of Israel, and you shall say to them, When you come in to the land which I am giving to you, and have reaped its harvest, and have brought in the sheaf, or the beginning of your harvest, to the priest,
Lev 23:11  then he shall wave the sheaf before YHWH for your acceptance; on the morrow of the sabbath the priest shall wave it.
Lev 23:12  And you shall prepare a lamb in the day you wave the sheaf, one without blemish, a son of a year, for a burnt offering to YHWH.
Lev 23:13  And its food offering shall be two tenths part of flour mixed with oil, a fire offering to YHWH, a sweet fragrance; and its drink offering, a fourth of a hin of wine.
Lev 23:14  And you shall not eat bread, nor roasted grain, nor fresh ears, until this same day, until you have brought the offering of your God; it is a never ending statute throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

Wave Sheaf Offering

Ronald Dart of Christian Education Ministries noted that there was a Jewish/Christian observance on the Sunday after the Passover crucifixion:

“On the evening after the Sabbath was over, the very first sheaf of grain of the early harvest was cut from the ground. It was prepared that night by threshing the barley from the chaff and then parching it over a fire. The next morning, the priest lifted an omer of the grain to God as the presentation of the firstfruits of the harvest. Now, compare this to Christian theology of the resurrection.

But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming (1 Corinthians 15:20-23).

It is clear enough that, in referring to “Christ the firstfruits, Paul is referring directly to that first sheaf offered on the morning after the Sabbath by the priest. His wording leaves no room for doubt. James will refer to this as well: “Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures” (James 1:18). What we see here is Christ as the first of the firstfruits in the resurrection, with the remainder of the firstfruits to follow at his coming.

So this particular Sunday was important to both Jews and Christians. To Jews, it was the day of the offering of the firstfruits, the first day of the seven weeks to the Feast of Firstfruits. To Christians, it was the morning of Jesus’ presentation to the Father and of his first appearances to his disciples after his resurrection from the dead. And it was the first day of the seven weeks to Pentecost.

For the first Christians, the symbolism of the Jewish observance was seen to point directly to Christ. The connection was clear and strong from the start. The early church had not adopted a calendar different from that of the Jewish majority in the first century, the calendar was crucial, because it defined the time of observance of the feasts. There is not a word in the New Testament to suggest any change from the Jewish observance…so the comparison between liturgy and events was, to them, even more apparent.

Now consider this carefully. This Sunday was celebrated early on as the day of Christ’s first appearances after his resurrection. It was an anniversary that appeared on the Jewish calendar on the first Sunday after Passover every year. As explained in the last chapter, every place in the New Testament where you see the expression “The first day of the week” it is referring, not to a Sunday, but to a singular day of the year. The first day of the seven Sabbaths or weeks leading up to Pentecost. It is an annual, not a weekly observance. It was, for want of a better term, “wave sheaf Sunday” (Ronald Dart From Passover to Easter. April 12, 2006).

Deu 16:9  You shall number to yourself seven weeks. When the sickle begins to reap in the standing grain, you shall begin to number seven weeks.
Deu 16:10  And you shall keep the Feast of Weeks to YHWH your God according to the measure of the freewill offering of your hand, which you shall give according as YHWH your God blesses you.
1Co 15:20  But now Christ has been raised from the dead; He became the firstfruit of those having fallen asleep.
1Co 15:21  For since death is through man, also through a Man is a resurrection of the dead;
1Co 15:22  for as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.
1Co 15:23  But each in his own order: Christ, the firstfruit; afterward those of Christ at His coming.
Lev 23:15  And you shall number to you from the next day after the sabbath, from the day you bring in the sheaf of the wave offering; they shall be seven complete sabbaths;
Lev 23:16  the next day after the seventh sabbath, you shall number fifty days; and you shall bring near a new food offering to YHWH;
Lev 23:17  you shall bring in bread out of your dwellings for a wave offering, two loaves; they shall be of two tenth ephah of flour; they shall be baked with leaven; firstfruits to YHWH.
Lev 23:18  And besides the bread, you shall offer seven lambs, without blemish, sons of a year, and one bull, a son of the herd, and two rams; they are a burnt offering to YHWH, with their food offering and their drink offerings, a fire offering of soothing fragrance to YHWH.
Lev 23:19  And you shall offer one he-goat for a sin offering, and two lambs, sons of a year, for a sacrifice of peace offerings.
Lev 23:20  And the priest shall wave them, besides the bread of the firstfruits, a wave offering before YHWH, besides the two lambs; they are holy to YHWH for the priest.
Lev 23:21  And you shall make a proclamation on this same day; it is a holy gathering to you. You shall do no work of service. It is a never ending statute in all your dwellings throughout your generations.

According to the Talmud, Menachot 10:4, after the wave sheaf was reaped the priests would parch it with fire and beat it with reeds and stems of the plants so that the grains would not be crushed.  Here is a picture of the sufferings of Messiah (Isaiah 53) who was beaten and ‘parched with fire’ yet without a bone being broken (John 19:36).

Firstfruits – Firstborn
In Hebrew, the firstfruits and the first born are the same, from the word בכר ‘bakar’ which means the choicest one.

And they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
